The Matriarch: Marie Thérèse Coincoin

We honor the legacy of Marie Thérèse Coincoin (1742-1816). Born into enslavement, she did not just survive the brutal realities of her time; she transcended them with profound intelligence and resilience.

Through her incredible business acumen in agriculture, cultivating tobacco, indigo, and herbs, she generated the wealth necessary to purchase her own freedom and, subsequently, the freedom of her children and grandchildren. She became a wealthy landowner and the matriarch of a dynasty that still thrives today.

She understood the alchemy of the earth. She turned the very soil of oppression into the currency of liberation.
